Historical Background and Significance of Holi 2024

Holi is a festival that commemorates the triumph of good over evil and the divine love shared by Lord Krishna and Radha. It is also observed as a harvest festival, commemorating the coming of spring and the end of winter. According to Hindu mythology, Radha was exceptionally fair, while Lord Krishna had a darker complexion. Krishna was frequently concerned that Radha would reject him due to their contrasting skin tones, and he protested to his mother, Yashoda. Yashoda once joked that Krishna should paint Radha’s face a different color to mask any abnormalities. Krishna followed his mother’s advice and used gulal to stain Radha’s face. And that is how the Holi celebrations began.

Another Holi mythology involves King Hiranyakashipu, his son Prahalad, who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, and his aunt Holika, the demon. According to Indian mythology, Hiranyakashipu received a blessing that kept both humans and animals from killing him. So he had them worship him. After his son became a follower of Lord Vishnu and refused to worship him, Hiranyakashipu instructed his sister Holika to have him killed by sitting on a funeral pyre and covering himself with a cloth to hide himself from the flames. The following are considered auspicious times to perform the puja, according to Drik Panchang:
