Time for a Reality Check : All of society needs to pause and reflect on the changes in gender dynamics. Sometimes, I find that gender equality is beneficial for women who are genuinely helpless. Do you feel that nowadays, men pretend to be more helpless than women? This trend didn’t start recently; it has been developing for a few years. We all grew up watching movies from the ’90s. Did you notice how a rich girl is often misled by the male actor? The rich girl’s father decides to marry her off to a wealthy man, but the writer portrays the rich man as the villain. This isn’t reality; 90 percent of wealthy people mind their own business. However, cinema often misguides us because they know that many Indians are not very wealthy, and they try to influence rich girls to marry poor guys who can’t even make ends meet.

The Impact of Wealth Dynamics on Relationships and Masculinity: A Critical Reflection on ’90s Cinema Narratives

If a rich woman marries a rich man, his generation is usually well-settled, and their children tend to be well-behaved and intelligent. That’s why I dislike ’90s movies; they create exaggerated storylines. I’m not denying the existence of some wealth gaps, but a significant gap can destroy an entire generation. Such movies create a narrative of helpless men, and nowadays, many men complain excessively and struggle to handle even minor situations. While I don’t support the idea of “men don’t feel pain,” how can men forget that they are men? Feeling compassion for women is important, but excessive vulnerability is not good for our society. When you feel deeply hurt, act like a normal person. You can have both ego and helplessness at the same time. First, clarify what you truly need. Helplessness is valid, but please don’t let it define your nature.
