Labour Day 2024 Date: Labour Day commemorates and honours the contributions of workers all across the world.
Labor Day 2024: Also known as May Day or International Workers’ Day, we observe Labor Day on May 1st of each year. This day has two purposes:
- It reminds workers of their rights and
- It recognizes their contributions to society.
Historical Background of Labor Day:
The origins of Labour Day can be traced back to the nineteenth-century struggle for workers’ rights in the United States. On May 1, 1886, approximately 200,000 workers went on strike to demand an eight-hour workday. This movement became violent in Chicago, resulting in the Haymarket Affair.
A pleasant gathering in Chicago’s Haymarket Square ended tragically when a bomb exploded. The Haymarket Affair, as it became known, had losses on both sides – protestors and police officers.
In 1889, the International Socialist Conference established May 1st as Workers’ Day to commemorate the labor movement and the Haymarket event. A year later, in 1890, there was the first official celebration.
The significance of Labour Day:
Workers have made major contributions to nation-building through their hard work. Labour Day not only recognizes workers’ hard work, but also tries to educate them about their rights and protect them from exploitation. It is also intended to motivate initiatives aimed at improving laborers’ working conditions and advancing their careers.
Celebrations in different countries:
Many countries celebrate Labour Day as a national holiday. Several events and seminars are scheduled on this day to recognize workers’ achievements and contributions. In some regions, rallies are held, and posters and banners are utilized to promote awareness of the workers’ rights.
